Travancore Rulers


DR001: Anizham Tirunal Marthanda Varma Maharaja (1705 – 1758). Period of reign: 1729 – 1758, Considered the Maker of Modern Travancore won many wars by virtue of his bold leadership and astute diplomacy. Famous for the epochal decision of ‘Tiruppadidanam’ by which the Maharaja dedicated the state as well as the Royal Family to Lord Sree Padmanabha, the tutelary Diety of the rulers of Travancore, and assumed the title Padmanabha Dasa (the vassal of Lord Padmanabha)


DR002: Karthika Tirunal Rama Varma Maharaja (1724 – 1798). Period of reign : 1758 – 1798, Ever pious and considered, his devotion to duty won him the esteem and affection of his people who called him Dharma Raja (the Just Ruler). He was also a scholar and poet. Authored Blarama Bharatham and several attakathas.


DR003: Avittom Tirunal Balarama Varma Maharaja (1782 – 1810). Period of reign : 1798 – 1810, His reign was period of turbulence in the history of Travancore.


DR004: H H Maharani Ayilyam Tirunal Gouri Lakshmi Bayi (1795–1814). Period of reign: 1811–1814, The only Queen of Travancore. From 1813 to 1814 she was regent for Prince Swathi Tirunal. She had the sagacity to discern what was ideal for the modernization of Travancore.


DR006: H H Swathi Tirunal Rama Varma Maharaja (1813–1846). Period of reign : 1829–1846, Hailed as ‘Garbhasreeman’ (‘Sovereign even while in the womb’), Swathi Tirunal Maharaja evinced a remarkable taste for poetry and music. Many present day institutions of governance were started by him. The court of this powerful king was adorned by men of learning and talented musicians from all over the country. A reign reckoned as the Golden Age in the history of Travancore.


DR007: H H Uthram Tirunal Marthanda Varma Maharaja (1814–1860). Period of reign: 1847–1860, An able administrator and a great patron of Kathakali, he was the first person to learn and practice modern medicine in Kerala.


DR008: H H Ayilyam Tirunal Rama Varma Maharaj (1832–1880). Period of reign: 1860–1880, His was a re that transformed Travancore into a ‘Model state’.ign


DR009:H H Visakham Tirunal Rama Varma Maharaja (1837–1885). Period of reign: 1880–1885, Known as Rama Varma, the Learned; his administration that lasted only five years was remarkable. He was also practical minded botanist, introduced tapioca which later became the staple diet of the average Keralite.


DR010: H H Sree Mulam Tirunal Rama Varma (1857–1924). Period of reign: 1885–1924 During his reign, the state took major strides in development. The tents of democratic functioning were introduced in his period.


DR011: H H Maharani Sethu Parvathy Bayi (1895–1985). Period of reign: Served as Regent for Prince Chithira Tirunal Balarama Varma from 1924 to 1931. An able ruler, she abolished the devadasi system, poorapattu animal sacrifice. She laid the foundation for the Pallivasal Hydro-electric project, the first of its kind in the State.

DR012: H H Chithira Tirunal Balarama Varma Maharaja (1912–1991). Period of reign: 1931–1949, Raja Pramukh from 1949–1956, As the last ruler of Travancore, he will be remembered for the epochal Temple Entry Proclamation which ended the ban on lower caste people from entering the Hindu temples in the state. His reign also witnessed rapid industrialization and development.
